אגף הילדים החדש The New Pediatrics Building

The Department of Pediatrics

The department of Pediatrics at the Barzilai Medical Center is one of the oldest departments that were built since the establishment of the hospital in 1961. The department was built as a one story structure with roofing tile according to the standards at that time, and since then it has not undergone any major structural renovation. The area of the ward is 2,100 square meters and divided to old style big rooms with eight and even ten beds in each room. Kids between the ages 0-15 years are hospitalized in this old ward. During the winter seasons the dining area and the corridor turn to admission areas. This old fashioned overcrowded ward offers no privacy and no space for the parents to stay with their ill children.

The current concept today is that the department of pediatrics is a parent-child unit. The rooms should be big enough for the parents to stay with their sick child. To fulfill these conditions, a new modern building with double the number of beds must be constructed.

The project of a new pediatrics building is ready. The new department will contain modern rooms for no more than two to three beds with many facilities to make the stay of the sick child unstressful. Parents will have plenty of space to stay with their children. a modern Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and a new modern pediatric day care are also planned.

Even though most parents express a high level of satisfaction from the medical treatment their children receive at the department of Pediatrics, they are dissatisfied from the general condition of the ward. The overcrowding and poor physical conditions in the Pediatrics ward drove some parents to change their minds and transfer their children to modern hospitals in the center of Israel. This inequity must end. The project of a new pediatric building will bridge over this inequity and sick children will receive the same level of services as those in the center of Israel.

Help us to improve the environment of the sick children. Donations will be greatly appreciated.
