The Gynecology Wing
The Barzilai Medical Center was established in 1961 in the city of Ashkelon, 35 miles south of Tel-Aviv. Today, the Barzilai Medical Center is a 500 bed general government hospital and a level II trauma center. It is a teaching hospital affiliated to the Faculty of Sciences at the Ben Gurion University of the Negev in Beer Sheba, and has its own School of Nursing. Most of the departments are approved for full residency programs.
The Barzilai Medical Center serves over 500,000 inhabitants of the area including a substantial number of new immigrants from the former USSR and Ethiopia who settled in Ashkelon. Apart from Ashkelon, the served population comes from Ashdod, Kiryat Gat, Sderot (the most attacked city by the Palestinians), Netivot, as well as the surrounding villages and Kibbutzim.
The Obstetrics and Gynecology complex at the Barzilai Medical Center provides all the services a woman needs beginning with In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), through prenatal care, high risk pregnancy care, sophisticated delivery rooms, three dimensional ultrasonography, and all types of treatments and surgical procedures for gynecological diseases.
The Obstetrics wing was renovated about ten years ago thanks to the generous donation from the J.I.A. The gynecology wing did not gain yet any attention. It is the same old fashioned roof tile structure with big rooms for 4 and even 10 beds, one bathroom and toilets for each room.
Many functions are compressed in this old style gynecology wing: The IVF unit, maternal and gynecological ultrasonography unit, high risk pregnancy unit, mini-emergency gynecology room and the gynecology department. The waiting area for all these services is the corridor.
On top of these structural conditions, most of the air-conditioning system of the old part of the hospital and other machinery reside in the basement of the gynecology wing, resulting in distressing noise and unbearable earth vibrations.
Despite these awful conditions and room facilities, women hospitalized in the gynecology department are usually highly satisfied of the medical treatment. More than 4000 women are seen every year in the gynecology emergency room, 1100 gynecological procedures are performed each year, 1400 ultrasound scans done annually and 5000 visits to the IVF unit.
The medical staff is doing his best to provide the top medical treatment. Many clinical research studies are conducted in the gynecology department especially in the IVF unit.
The Barzilai Medical Center plans to renovate the Gynecology wing and to move away the air-conditioning system and other machinery from the basement.
The new designed wing will allow privacy, smaller rooms for 1-3 beds with separate bathrooms and toilets, separated waiting areas, suitable spaces for ultrasonography-guided procedures and comfortable environment for the IVF customers.
We believe that our patients deserve the best rooming facilities.
Help us to make this dream true.
The estimated cost of the project is 1.5 million US Dollars.
Donations will be greatly appreciated.
