Activity

The unit of oral and maxillofacial surgery is a 6-bed unit where patients are hospitalized for elective procedures and for emergency treatment. The unit is well known as a leading one inside and outside Israel especially in the field of endoscopy of the salivary glands and the three dimensional CT scanner. It is affiliated to the Hadassah medical center in Jerusalem, and certified by the Israel Medical Scientific Council for full residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery. The physicians of the unit gained lot of experience with maxillofacial injuries and fractures of the facial bones of the soldiers and victims of motor vehicle accidents. The maxillofacial surgeons have also great experience in repairing inborn errors and defects of the facial bones, mandible, maxilla and treatment of mucosal diseases and teeth. Some of the surgeries are performed under general anesthesia.

The former head of the oral and maxillofacial unit, Prof Nachlieli, was the first to invent and develop the worldwide salivary gland endoscope. He was the first to describe the valve of the parotid gland tract and to extract calculus from it. Endoscopy of the salivary glands is performed under local anesthesia, the patient is awake and discharged home after a short period of rest. The rate of complications following this procedure is very low. Endoscopic treatment of salivary gland calculi replaced the classical salivary glands operations.

Treatment of dental diseases are performed usually in the clinic, but sometimes under general anesthesia in cases of complex procedures or in non-cooperating patients.

Academic Activity

The medical staff of the department is very active in teaching students and interns. The physicians are involved in many research projects and are invited to lecture in international meetings.
